Late last year it was revealed that Lindsay Lohan, who was undergoing court-appointed treatment for substance abuse issues at the Betty Ford Clinic at the time, was released from her highly-anticipated role in the forthcoming biopic about porn star Linda Lovelace.
She was soon replaced by “Watchman” starlet Malin Akerman. And while Akerman is excited to start production in March, she admitted that taking over from Lohan amid the controversial circumstances wasn’t easy.
“Of course (it was so awkward) but it will be a wonderful journey,” she told FOX411’s Pop Tarts at the BVLGARI Fundraiser Benefitting Save the Children & APJ on Thursday evening. “Her life was really incredible; she (Lovelace) was a survivor. Unfortunately she’s not with us anymore, but her life was really incredible and I am excited for that to come out.”
But porn star films aside, the 32-year-old is also very passionate about the issue of education and hopes that, even in spite of all that needs to be improved, Americans appreciate the system we’ve already built.
“Everyone is allowed to complain for a minute no matter what your situation is. We all have our complaints in our own terms, but you have to look at big picture, and say thank you,” Akerman added. “But we are so lucky here in America. We still have a lot of work to do on our own educational system but the whole world needs help, so anything we can do (to help others) is great.”
Malin Akerman has a bit of a girl crush on Jennifer Aniston, it seems, coming off filming the 2011 comedy “Wanderlust,” in which Aniston and Paul Rudd play an urban couple in search of a counterculture lifestyle.
And no, it isn’t because of any topless scene — the cast simply spent a lot of time together on location.
“She is such a loving, genuine woman and fun. You want her to be your best friend,” the “Proposal” and “Couples Retreat” actress told People on Wednesday.
Apparently, one of the benefits of being friends with Akerman is a sort of bare-bones matchmaking service as well — not the jealous type, Malin aimed to drum up some chemistry on Jen’s behalf.
“Guys, get out there! Nab her! She is every guy’s dream.”
If it wasn’t going to be nerve-wracking enough for Malin Akerman to watch her performance in “The Bang Bang Club” during the premiere at TIFF tonight, she also has to worry about what her friends and family are going to think.
“I haven’t seen the film so it’s one of those, I hope I don’t have to walk the walk of shame on the way out,” admits the actress during a round table interview Wednesday afternoon.
“I have some of my closest girlfriends from high school who are coming, my brother, my mother, my step dad, it’s just going to be great to see everyone. It’s really special you know.
“The Bang Bang Club, ” which also stars Ryan Phillippe and Taylor Kitsch, chronicles the true story of four young photographers in South Africa who risked their lives to document the final bloody days of apartheid. Akerman plays a photo editor at the local paper who pushes to get their photos published, despite pressure from the government to censor them.
Born in Sweden, Akerman was raised in Niagara on the Lake and attended high school in St. Catherine’s, Ont., and Toronto. She also studied psychology at York University.
“I lived here for 22 years and always watched the Toronto film fest from the outside and I always wanted to be a part of it and now I finally get to go.”
Now living in L.A., Akerman says she never attended TIFF while she lived in Toronto because she was always busy with school and the film industry wasn’t on her radar. That all changed when she started doing some commercials and landed some guest roles on TV shows .
“I did that here for about a year to two years before I ended up going to L.A. and that’s when I decided, ‘Oh this is fun. It’s kind of like psychology but more selfish. I’ll give it a shot and then go help others later,’” she recounts with a laugh.
“I love secondhand shopping. You find the best stuff! I can’t wait until my jeans and my boots are all worn in—when you shop secondhand, it’s already done for you. Plus, you can buy a T-shirt for $10 and cut it up into a new style, and it doesn’t matter if you mess it up.”

Katie Holmes’ co-star Malin Akerman has said she wanted to ‘eat’ her little girl Suri.
Akerman, 32, worked with Holmes, 31, on their new movie The Romantics and said her co-star’s four-year-old daughter Suri was great on set.
She said to E! Online: ‘You just want to eat her! You want to eat that little kid so badly. And she’s a smart, smart girl. She’s so smart and well socialised because she’s always on set.’
Akerman was equally impressed with Holmes herself: ‘She’s like the sweetest hometown girl. She comes to set with cupcakes and coffee and orders pizza for everyone.
‘She’s like the mother hen… And she’s super cool and really, really funny. We had a blast.’
