Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that Watchmen will be available to purchase on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on 27th July 2009.
Directed by Zack Snyder (300), Watchmen is a based on the 1986-1987 comic book limited series Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Listed in Time magazines “All-Time 100 Novels”, the film adaptation stars Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Patrick Wilson.
• Watchmen will be available to buy on 1 Disc DVD, 2 Disc Limited Edition DVD & 2 Disc Blu-ray which also includes Digital Copy
Race to Witch Mountain squashed Watchmen at the box-office over the weekend. Attendance for Zack Snyder’s controversial adaptation dropped by two-thirds to around $18 million in receipts, while the the Disney remake hauled in an estimated $25 million.
But the dystopian comic blockbuster isn’t dead yet. Far from it.
With over $49 million in total international receipts to go with its domestic take of over $86 million, chatter about Watchmen’s failure to recoup its $200 million expense is grinding to a halt. And, as Wired.com noted earlier, until potential blockbusters Terminator Salvation, Star Trek and X-Men Origins: Wolverine arrive in May, Watchmen has few rivals on the horizon. It seems likely that Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ canonical comic will survive its evolution to the big screen just fine, thanks.
And that’s just theatrical revenue. Once the DVD campaign gets rolling, Watchmen could easily make back its costs with cash to spare, especially if Synder puts together a director’s cut that reintegrates extra material along with the entire Tales of the Black Freighter meta-narrative.
Throw in the limited-run theatrical release of an already announced director’s cut in July, and all that Monday morning quarterbacking pigeonholing Watchmen as a letdown could boil down to uninformed speculation by parties unaware of the comic’s enduring power and influence.

From the Examiner
Actress Malin Akerman stopped by the show to talk about her role as Laurie Jupiter / Silk Spectre II in the latest comic book film Watchmen, which is in theaters now.
Watchmen is directed by Zach Snyder, who also directed such epics as 300 and the screenplay was penned by David Hayter and Alex Tse.
Based on the 1980s graphic novel by writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons, the film is set in 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are a regular fixture on everyday society. When masked vigilante and antihero Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) discovers that one of his former colleages was murdered, he goes on a mission to unravel a plot to kill and discredit all superheroes. In doing so, he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion, including the Silk Spectre II (Akerman) so as to better watch over humanity.
But, who watches the Watchmen? Loads of fans who helped the movie dominate the box office last weekend to the tune of $55.7 million.
Akerman was born in Stockholm, Sweden and raised in Toronto, Canada. Fans will recognize her from recentl films such as 27 Dresses, The Heartbreak Kid and Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. She also played Juna Millken in the TV series The Comeback. You can catch Akerman in the upcoming films The Proposal and Couples Retreat.

What if actress Malin Akerman (who played hottie Silk Spectre in Watchmen) had a roommate who was wayyy behind on rent money? Why, she’d charge a bunch of “nerds” ridiculous amounts of money to take a fake Watchmen tour through Akerman’s pad and watch the gal sleep. This latest video from Funny or Die shows exactly that situation … and as the seconds tick away, the absurdity kicks into high hear (“Okay, then what about lunch with a bunch of thirty-somethings dressed as the Swamp Thing?”).
