Ever wonder what it would be like to have to live below the poverty line?

The folks over at Live Below the Line did — and, it got them thinking: why not get tons of people to gain a sense of awareness about poverty, while, at the same time, raising money for charity?

And so, the “Live Below the Line Challenge” was born.

The challenge gets folks to eat for a limited amount of money ($1.50) every day for five days. And, this year, were so glad to hear that several celebrities — think Hugh Jackman, Kevin Connolly, Malin Akerman, Nick Lachey, Josh Groban and Bette Midler — are all getting involved.

Given the line-up for the upcoming dating show parody Burning Love, I’m pretty sure it’s mathematically impossible that the web series won’t leave you clutching your sides from laughter. Along with star Ken Marino — of Wanderlust, Wet Hot American Summer, and “I wanna dip my balls in it!” fame — and producer/star Ben Stiller, the show features Michael Ian Black, Adam Scott, Ken Jeong, Kerri Kenney, Party Down‘s Ryan Hansen, Malin Akerman, Kristen Bell, and even a former Bachelor himself: Jake Pavelka.

Burning Love premieres on Yahoo! Screen’s Comedy Channel June 4. It will be online at screen.yahoo.com/burning-love/

Posted in News, The Smart One

Malin Akerman, who had been pursued for multiple comedy pilots this season, is set to star opposite Portia de Rossi in ABC’s dueling sisters comedy pilot The Smart One.

The project, written by Don Todd, centers on a brilliant and successful woman (de Rossi) who has to go to work for her less brainy but more popular sister (Akerman) — a former beauty queen, weather girl … and now big-city mayor.

Jean Smart was just cast as the sisters’ mother. DeGeneres, Todd and Lauren Corrao are executive producing for Warner Bros TV.

Akerman, who co-starred on Lisa Kudrow’s cult HBO series The Comeback, has been focused primarily on features for the past few years. She will next be seen in Wonderlust and Rock Of Ages.

Posted in Catch 44, News

In the tradition of Pulp Fiction, Traffic and Go, and from the producers of Machete and 16 Blocks, Anchor Bay Films takes aim with the December 20th release of Catch .44 on Blu-ray™ and DVD. Oscar® winner Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland, “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior”), Bruce Willis (the Die Hard films, Red, The Expendables) and Malin Akerman (Watchmen, The Proposal, Couples Retreat) lead an all-star cast in this suspense thriller where everyone has an agenda…and a Magnum to back it up! SRP is $26.98 for the DVD and $29.99 for the Blu-ray™. Pre-book is November 23rd…

For Tes (Akerman) and her two cohorts Kara (Nikki Reed, Thirteen, the Twilight franchise) and Tara (Deborah Ann Woll, “True Blood”), the job sounded simple enough: intercept a double-cross drug shipment for their crime boss Mel (Willis) at an isolated diner. But when an unstoppable chain of events unfolds, everyone soon realizes no one is who they seem and the job may be something other than eliminating the competition. What started as simple instructions has now turned into a deadly cat-and-mouse game – with large guns pointed at everyone. Catch .44 also stars Brad Dourif (The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers, Dune), Michael Rosenbaum (“Smallville”) and Shea Whigham (“Boardwalk Empire”).

Bonus features on Catch .44 Blu-ray™ and DVD will include a filmmakers’ commentary.

You can pre-order the DVD and Blu-ray today!

Malin Akerman and Tyler Labine are co-starring in the Canadian indie pic Cottage Country from director Peter Wellington and Whizbang Films.

The dark comedy has Todd, played by Labine, eyeing perfection at the family cottage where he plans to propose to Cammie (Akerman). But best-laid plans come undone when Todd’s slacker brother, played by Daniel Petronijevic, arrives with his free-spirited girlfriend in a role performed by Lucy Punch.

Cottage Country marks a return to feature filmmaking for Wellington, an accomplished Canadian TV director who has ABC’s Rookie Blue, Queer As Folk and The Eleventh Hour among his credits. The theatrical feature is shooting in Toronto and Muskoka, Ontario through October 27, ahead of a 2012 release by Alliance Films.

Cottage Country was written by Jeremy Boxen (Lost Girl, Endgame) and is produced by Frank Siracusa, who also executive produces with Paul Gross. The project also marks a first-time movie collaboration between Siracusa and Whizbang Films.

Siracusa previously produced features like the First World War drama Passchendaele and Hobo With a Shotgun with rival producer Rhombus Media, and more recently worked with Bollywood producer Ajay Virmani and Canadian producer Don Carmody on the Indo-Canadian comedy Breakaway, which co-stars Rob Lowe.

Luc Montpellier is the DOP on Cottage Country, with production design by Phillip Barker and editing by Christopher Donaldson.

Casting was done by Libby Goldstein in Los Angeles and Lisa Parasyn Casting in Toronto.
